SATs are an important milestone for Year 6 students. While they are not the only measure of academic ability, they help schools assess progress in core subjects.

Parents play an important role in helping children approach SATs with confidence.

We have been using NLG since March 2024 to help my son with spelling. His tutor is Victoria, in just over a year, with one lesson a week, Victoria went back to re-teach our son phonics and has gradually built him up to doing Year 6 SATs practice tests. He is achieving scores now that we never really imagined would be possible. I cannot thank Victoria enough for the impact she has had on our son’s confidence and spelling ability. I would recommend her to anyone.

Focus on the Core Subjects

SATs assess three main areas:

  • Maths

  • Reading

  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling

Regular practice in these areas builds familiarity with exam questions.

Encourage Reading

Strong reading skills improve performance across many subjects.

Encouraging daily reading can significantly improve comprehension and vocabulary.

Build Confidence in Maths

Many SATs maths questions focus on problem solving.

Students should practice explaining their reasoning rather than just calculating answers.

Reduce Stress

Children often perform best when they feel relaxed and supported.

Avoid putting excessive pressure on results and focus on steady progress.

When Extra Support Helps

Some students benefit from additional help outside school.

Targeted support can help reinforce topics that may be difficult in a busy classroom environment.
