Which SATs does your child take?

In England, only the Year 6 tests are statutory. Year 2 tests are optional, so your child’s school decides whether to use them.

Optional

Year 2: KS1 assessments

Where schools use them, Year 2 pupils may sit Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling papers. Tuition focuses on core skills rather than adding test pressure.

Based on current Standards and Testing Agency guidance for England. Read the KS2 information for parents or the optional KS1 guidance.

How our tutors help

Targeted preparation, without the pressure

Many children know the content but struggle with wording, timing or nerves. Your child’s tutor finds the real barrier, works from school feedback and introduces SATs-style questions gradually, so not every lesson feels like a test.

  • Test nerves

Familiarity built gradually so papers feel less daunting.

  • Running out of time

Pacing and fluency practice without losing accuracy.

  • Careless mistakes

Checking routines and reading what each question asks.

  • Reading confidence

Longer texts, inference and explaining evidence.

  • Multi-step problems

Breaking reasoning questions into manageable steps.

  • Moving to Year 7

Stronger core skills for a confident start at secondary.

How it works

Getting started is simple

Your child’s year group, school feedback and the areas they find hard.

  2. Meet your tutor

We match a DBS-checked tutor to your child’s needs.

  3. Find the starting point

The first lesson pinpoints strengths, gaps and priorities.

  4. Weekly 1:1 lessons

Focused practice that adapts as confidence grows.

FAQs

SATs preparation questions

What are SATs?

In England, “SATs” usually means the statutory Year 6 KS2 tests in Maths, English Reading, and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. Year 2 KS1 tests are optional.

Are SATs compulsory?

KS2 tests are statutory for eligible Year 6 pupils in England. KS1 tests are optional for schools. Your child’s school can explain what applies to them.

When are the next Year 6 SATs?

The next published KS2 test week is Monday 10 May to Thursday 13 May 2027. Dates can change, so check GOV.UK and your child’s school for updates.

When should SATs preparation start?

It depends on your child. Earlier support helps where gaps are persistent, while others may only need focused practice closer to test week.

Can you help with Year 2 KS1 assessments?

Yes. We offer age-appropriate 1:1 Maths and English support for Year 2, shaped around your child’s school approach and learning needs.

What does Year 6 SATs preparation cover?

Maths arithmetic and reasoning, English Reading, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling, plus question technique, checking strategies and timed practice where useful.

What are KS2 results used for?

They measure attainment against national curriculum standards and help show where extra support may be useful. Secondary schools can also use them to plan support when your child starts Year 7.

How long is a SATs tutoring lesson?

Our standard one-to-one SATs tutoring lesson lasts 40 minutes and is scheduled weekly. Find a tutor to discuss your child’s needs.

Do you offer group SATs tutoring?

No. SATs preparation is 1:1 online tutoring. Our group tutoring currently covers GCSE Maths and GCSE English only.

Are lessons online?

Yes. Lessons are live, one to one and online, so your child can learn from home with a tutor matched to their needs.

Ready to help your child feel SATs-ready?

Tell us where your child needs support and we’ll match them with the right tutor. Weekly one-to-one tutoring is matched to your child’s learning needs.
