GCSE Results Day 2026: What To Do Next
GCSE Results Day can feel huge for students and parents. Use this guide to check the date, understand next steps, plan for resits or reviews, and get the right GCSE tutoring support quickly.
The key GCSE results facts
What students should do first
Results day is easier when the next step is clear. Follow this order before making decisions about sixth form, college, apprenticeships, reviews or resits.
Open and check every grade
Look closely at English Language, Maths and any subjects required for sixth form, college, T Levels or apprenticeships.
Compare results with entry requirements
Check whether your chosen course or route is still available before assuming the answer is yes or no.
Speak to school staff before leaving
If a grade is unexpected, ask about access to scripts, reviews of marking, course alternatives and deadlines.
Build the support plan
Decide whether the student needs resit tutoring, confidence support, subject catch-up or preparation for the next academic stage.
Choose the route that fits your results
If the grades went well
Use the momentum. A-Level, college and sixth form courses move faster than GCSE, so the best next step is often transition support.
- Strengthen core Maths, English or Science skills before September.
- Prepare for A-Level-style workload and independent study.
- Keep confidence high after a strong result.
If results are lower than expected
Do not make a rushed decision. Speak to the school or college, check entry flexibility and ask whether a review of marking or resit route is suitable.
- Check how close the mark is to the next grade boundary.
- Ask whether the grade could go down as well as up.
- Plan targeted tutoring if gaps need closing quickly.
If English or Maths needs a resit
GCSE English Language and GCSE Maths exams are available in November for eligible students aged 16 or above on 31 August of that year.
- Start early instead of waiting until the pressure builds.
- Focus on exam technique, confidence and high-value topics.
- Use weekly structure to rebuild momentum after results day.
If you are supporting your child
Stay calm, check facts, avoid comparison and help your child talk to the right adviser before deciding what to do next.
- Give your child time to process the results.
- Confirm deadlines for enrolment, reviews or resits.
- Put support in place early if confidence has dropped.
Reviews, appeals and resits
If a grade looks wrong
Your school or college can request access to scripts and ask the awarding organisation to check for marking errors through a review of marking. A mark can go up or down, and the grade can stay the same, go up or go down.

Real support after an emotional day
I wanted GCSE revision for my Autistic son. I started the revision three months before the GCSEs started and the confidence I saw within my son with each session was noticeable. They set clear plans and structure to lessons and gave me regular feedback.
Lucy Ibbotson, GCSE Revision ParentThe sessions gave structure, focus and confidence before exams. We felt supported throughout and knew what the next step was.
